Johnny Depp in Talks for Dr. Strange

Completely unexpected news from Marvel Studios today.

Highly placed sources have informed the Latino Review that superstar actor and Disney go-to Johnny Depp is very deep in talks to portray Master of the Mystic Arts Dr. Strange, Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme.

The 50-year-old actor is a comic book fan, and is said to be very interested in jumping onto the Marvel machine. Johnny Depp also happens to have a very fruitful relationship with Marvel’s owner, Disney. It was Disney that took a gamble when it gave the eccentric actor his first leading role in Pirates of The Caribbean, which spanned a franchise went on to earn billions or the studio. He also went on to do well in their live-action Alice in Wonderland film.

Depp is currently signed on to do a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but if he ends up taking Dr. Strange that studio would shift around the production schedule for it so he could do both. This means that they are looking to start production on the comic adaptation fairly soon.

For the uninformed, Stephen Strange was a skilled but arrogant surgeon. After a car accident, his hands were injured so that he could no longer hold a scalpel. he wasted his considerable fortune with attempts to repair his hands. Finally hearing of the legendary Ancient One, Strange traveled to Tibet and is initially turned away, but after he foils an attempt on the Ancient One’s life, Strange is accepted. Under the Ancient One’s tutelage, he learns heroism and humility as we as magic. Eventually, the Ancient One passes on the title of the Sorcerer Supreme and the role of protecting the realm of Earth from magical threats.

Dr. Strange is going to be part of Marvel’s phase three plan, and will most likely be released sometime in 2016. There’s always a chance we’ll see the character show up in a post-credits sequence of Avenger: Age of Ultron.
