Guillermo Del Toro’s Dark DC Film Moves Forward
One of the 1,001 projects that Guillermo Del Toro is working on seems to be gaining traction, and if it takes off it could bring the filmmaker to some of the darkest corners of the DC Comics universe.
A few months back, word surfaced that Del Toro was possibly developing a movie for Warner Bros. (which owns DC) called Heaven Sent. The film would essentially be the dark mirror image of the also-in-development Justice League movie, featuring a lineup of supernatural beings and antiheroes like Swamp Thing, the Phantom Stranger, John Constantine, Deadman, Zatanna and the Spectre.
With Warner Bros. looking to put the Justice League on the screen by 2015, it seems as if the company is interested in getting Del Toro’s project underway as well. Speaking with IGN, he revealed that the movie, now called Dark Universe, has landed “the perfect writer.” He added about the lineup of characters:
“That roster, you’re talking about my childhood. Swamp Thing, for me, is a rock star. Demon, the Jack Kirby Demon, Etrigan, is amazing. And then you go to Constantine, who I thought was an amazing creation. I want to do the Constantine of the comics. Deadman… it’s really a lot of work but a lot of fun.”
Del Toro cautioned that the script has not been written and the movie not even given an official green light yet, but did say that it is part of an effort by Warner Bros./DC to “make their universe cohesive,” adding that the Justice League plans were around well before Marvel scored such a huge success with The Avengers and that the company is feeling “really, really confident with what they have.”
In other news, Del Toro (who’s doing press rounds as producer of the upcoming horror flick Mama) mentioned to The Playlist that he may try to revive his dream adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. The movie was scrapped by Universal a couple of years ago over budget issues, but the director is planning to make a new studio presentation and give Mountains one more try.
