Hench TV Series In Development At NBC
Danny McBride’s “Hench” doesn’t appear to be moving forward — no big surprise, considering we’ve heard approximately zilch on the project in three years. But that doesn’t mean an adaptation of the AiT/Planet Lar graphic novel is necessarily out of the running. Far from it, in fact.
Deadline reports that NBC is developing a new series titled “Hench,” with Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey’s Film 44 teaming up with Universal TV and writer Alexandra Cunningham for the series.
The report describes the series as centering “on a regular guy who, in order to support his family, gets jobs temping for super villains.” The “Hench” comic book, meanwhile, focused on a disabled football player who became a supervillain to earn some extra cash. Sounds similar, doesn’t it?
When the comic was first announced as a McBride starring vehicle, creator Adam Beechen was understandably very excited. “I’m pretty blown away, as you might imagine,” he said in an interview. “It’s actually been in the works for a couple of months. And I wasn’t allowed to talk about it and it was driving me crazy. Only a couple of people besides me knew about it and I just wanted to climb up to the rooftop and scream about it for the last two months.”
Hopefully even without McBride, Beechen’s enthusiasm remains intact at the idea of “Hench” becoming a television series. After all, a weekly series about a supervillain’s reluctant sidekick — not a bad concept at all!
