Sin City 2 Set To Start Shooting Mid Year

When it comes to his upcoming projects, Robert Rodriguez in recent years has been mostly tell without much show. The biggest potential project the Austin auteur has touted endlessly about is Sin City 2, the proposed sequel to his 2005 ultra-literal comic book adaptation of Frank Miller’s series.

The latest round of talk comes from the SXSW Interactive Festival, where Rodriguez claimed that Sin City 2 would finally begin shooting this summer. Always a fan of tight production schedules, the shoot would in theory take place immediately after wrapping photography on “Machete Kills,” the follow-up to his Grindhouse breakout.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Business blog had the original report, which mostly concerned Rodriguez’s new animation studio, Quickdraw Productions. Rodriguez told THR nothing specific about casting his follow-up to the star-studded “Sin City,” but he said that the ensemble “will be of the same caliber and eclecticism as the first film.”

“The same caliber of eclecticism” as the original “Sin City” means a hell of a lot when you consider that Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, Elijah Wood, Rutger Hauer, Benicio Del Toro, Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson, Michael Clarke Duncan, Carla Gugino, Brittany Murphy, Josh Hartnett and yes, Ron Swanson himself, Nick Offerman, were all in it. Eclectic might be an understatement.

Talk of a sequel to “Sin City” began almost immediately after the original hit theaters in April of 2005, and Miller, as Rodriguez’s co-director, has done his fair share of hyping up sequel talk. Most of the progress updates revolved around a script, which underwent a re-write in August last year by Academy Award-winning “The Departed” scribe William Monahan.
