Constantine Director Hoping To Make Hard-R Sequel

Six years before Francis Lawrence directed Twilight star Robert Pattinson in Water For Elephants, the filmmaker was behind the camera for a big-screen adaptation of one of Vertigo’s most celebrated comic book series, Hellblazer.

The 2005 film Constantine cast Keanu Reeves as supernatural detective John Constantine, and received mixed reviews from mainstream audiences, but found success at the box office (over $230 million worldwide), and talk of a potential sequel has popped up nearly every year since its release. When MTV News spoke to Lawrence during the Water For Elephants press junket, we asked the director for an update.

“It’s interesting that over the years, ‘Constantine’ seems like it’s become… like it has this sort of cult following, which has been great,” said Lawrence. “It’s been embraced.”

While Lawrence seemed keen on revisiting the world of John Constantine, he indicated that a darker take on the character’s adventures was in order.

“It would be great to figure out a sequel, and if we did, and we’ve been trying to figure one out, it would be great to do the really dark, scary [version],” said Lawrence. “We got caught in that weird PG-13 – R no man’s land, and we should do the hard-R scary version, which I would love to do.”
