The Hulk Returns to TV

The Hulk is officially returning to television, and thankfully, his small screen resurrection is in some very capable hands.

Deadline reports that Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro and Battlestar Galactica executive producer David Eick are finalizing a deal to create the new Hulk series for ABC and Marvel TV. The series would follow Bruce Banner in his mid-twenties, a man who is “less reactive and more energized as the world is still his oyster.” The character will transform into the big green meanie by way of a mixture of prosthetics, puppetry and CGI.

If their deal pans out, del Toro and Eick would devise the pilot’s story together, sharing story and created by credits, with Eick writing the script and del Toro directing the pilot depending on his availability. Additionally, del Toro is overseeing the design process for the Hulk, which is expected to remain mostly traditional “with a few wild tweaks on the old look.”

In terms of a release schedule, Deadline reports that the “Hulk” series most likely won’t be ready until the fall of 2012, just a few short months after The Avengers arrives in theaters. Hulk, of course, is part of the roster for director Joss Whedon’s film, so mainstream audiences should presumably be quite familiar with the character again.

Speaking on the news, del Toro said that he and Eick have “coalesced a respectful but powerful way of retelling the Banner/Hulk story in a fresh way.”

Eick described Hulk as “one of the crown jewels of the Marvel world for generations” and added that it has been a “dream opportunity to join one of my all-time filmmaking heroes, Guillermo del Toro, in a faithful but unique retelling of the primal, emotionally-rich tale” of Bruce Banner.
