Voltron – Movie Scrapped, New TV Series And Toys Planned

The good news is that “Voltron” fans won’t have much longer to wait for the character’s triumphant return to action. The bad news? It looks like plans for that live-action movie might not happen after all.

According to Variety, “Voltron” rights-holders World Event Prods and Classic Media have dropped plans to reignite interest in the franchise with a live-action movie, opting instead to develop a new, “edgier” animated series and toy line debuting next year. The “Voltron Force” series will broadcast on Nicktoons, and feature 26 half-hour episodes about “five space explorers who pilot robotic lions that combine to form Voltron, an invincible guardian sworn to defend the Universe.”

Last we heard, the live-action film had taken a step forward by landing representation for its producers and rights-holders with United Talent Agency, but this week’s report indicates that an inability to find the proper tone for the film stalled the project indefinitely.

The report also offers some information about the new “Voltron” toy line that Mattel will produce, including toys based on the classic “Voltron” line and “action figures and playsets that revolve around an edgier, modernized robot.” No shelf date has been announced at this point.

“They’re pretty involved toys that have to transform and fit together,” said Ted Koplar, president of World Event Prods.
