Dynamite Entertainment to bring Total Recall

Following Boom Studios’ successful adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and Marvel’s recent Electric Ant miniseries, Total Recall is set to become the next Philip K. Dick property to head to comics.

Dynamite Entertainment has revealed that the company has acquired the rights to publish comic books based on “Total Recall;” the 1990 film that cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as a construction worker on Earth who discovers that he may actually be a Mars resistance fighter who must help a group of refugees break free from a corrupt corporation. “Total Recall” was based on a short story by Dick titled “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.”

“I am thrilled to announce that Dynamite has acquired the rights to Total Recall from StudioCanal,” said Dynamite President Nick Barrucci in the official announcement. “We will give this property the same tender care that we have given to so many of our other successful science fiction properties such as ‘Battlestar Galactica,’ ‘Stargate,’ and ‘Buck Rogers!'”

The “Total Recall” film was directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon, Jon Povill, and Gary Goldman. In addition to Schwarzenegger, the original cast included Sharon Stone, Ronny Cox, Michael Ironside, Rachel Ticotin and Marshall Bell.

The movie was followed by a TV series called “Total Recall: 2070” which aired on Showtime nine years later. However, the TV series owed its inspiration more to “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” than to “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” or the original film.

Last year, Columbia Pictures announced plans for a “Total Recall” remake with Kurt Wimmer (“Salt”) on board to write the script.
