Dick Giordano Passes On

Bob Layton has sent a message to the comics community at large.

Dear Friends & Colleagues,
It is my sorrowful duty to announce that legendary artist/editor/entrepreneur Dick Giordano passed away today.
Few could ever hope to match what he accomplished in his chosen profession, or to excel while maintaining great humor, compassion for his peers and an unwavering love for the art form.
His unique vision changed the comic industry forever and all of those who work in the business continue to share in the benefits of his sizable contributions.
I have been honored to call him a business partner, mentor and dear friend throughout the majority of my lifetime.
We will not see his like again.

Bob Layton

I understand a number of friends and family were contacted this morning to be told the sad news.

Dick Giordano, aged 77, will be remembered for many things. His role as editor-in-chief for Charlton oversaw the creation of the Charlton heroes, which he helped bring over to DC Comics when he joined the company. His stint as executive editor there through the eighties and into the nineties including the publication of the likes of Watchmen, Dark Knight and the reinvention of the DC Universe – indeed, he inked Crisis On Infinite Earths. His long career as an inker will best be remembered for his collaboration with Neal Adams on some of their most iconic work together. He also started a couple of art ad agencies and, with Bob Layton and David Michelinie, formed Future Entertainment. He also recently illustrated a graphic retelling of Moby Dick and appeared only a few weeks ago at Megacon in his home state of Florida, where last year he was their Guest Of Honor.
