Joe Quesada speaks on Comic Book Movies

Following the fantastically received “Iron Man 2” trailer, it’s clear that the moviegoing public is enthused about Marvel Studios’ upcoming film slate.

While the folks on the DC Comics side of the aisle have had plenty of success through “The Dark Knight” and hope to achieve similar results with “Jonah Hex” and “Green Lantern,” many eyes are understandably on Marvel’s ambitious plan to link “Iron Man,” “Thor” and “The First Avenger: Captain America” together in 2012’s “The Avengers.”

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada who, alongside creators like Brian Michael Bendis, has had a notable level of involvement in Marvel’s movie projects spoke about what he believes separates Marvel Studios’ output from other comic book films. In essence, it has everything to do with the comic book creators themselves.

“But the beauty of the Marvel films now, is that guys who work in comics are involved,” said Quesada. “That’s more than we could have said ten years ago about comic book movies that were getting made.”

“Matt Fraction is a perfect example,” he continued. “He got to sit down with Jon Favreau and Kevin Feige and discuss the new Iron Man movie. Being the current ‘Iron Man’ writer, Matt could offer a unique perspective on the character. Bendis is involved in the Marvel Creative Committee, as am I. I’m sure, from time to time, we’ll be bringing more creators in as projects call for them. More and more, the Marvel film world reaches out to the comics world, and now you’re starting to see that other studios and comic companies are taking note and are looking to copy that formula in some way.”

Indeed, Marvel’s closest competitor has taken steps to match the House of Ideas with the formation of DC Entertainment and the enlistment of comic book creators such as Geoff Johns to assist in film development. While Marvel may have struck gold with their current moviemaking process, it’s entirely possible that other comic book companies will follow suit and achieve the same level of success, if not higher.
