Fable II DLC delayed
|
Knothole Island add-on to Lionhead's best-seller pushed back to late January; Microsoft fingers "unexpected technical difficulties" as culprit.
Last month, Microsoft announced that Fable II, the sequel to Lionhead Studios' best-selling role-playing game, had already sold 1.5 million copies worldwide. More than half of those were bought in the United States in the 10 days after its October 21 release, according to figures from top retail-tracking company NPD Group. |

Dissidia: Final Fantasy descends mid-2009
|
Square Enix gives its PlayStation Portable 3D fighter a vague North American release window.
Given that each major installment in the Final Fantasy franchise features its own self-contained universe, fans of the series haven't had many chances to see their favorites from different games interact. However, that's set to change next year. Square Enix announced today that its franchise-spanning fighting game Dissidia: Final Fantasy is set for a "midyear 2009" North American release. |

OutRun racing onto 360, PS3
|
Sumo Digital developing downloadable Online Arcade iteration of Sega's famed Ferrari franchise; release set for early 2009.
Sega has a wealth of vintage arcade hits to mine for new material. But as Alien Syndrome and Golden Axe: Beast Rider have shown, classic roots don't always make for critically acclaimed revivals.
Yep, that's OutRun. One Sega nostalgia trip that has proven successful has been the publisher's resurrection of the OutRun franchise. Sega tapped Sumo Digital to handle development on the series, and the studio responded with such critical successes as 2004's OutRun2 for the Xbox and OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and PC. |

Metal Gear Solid touches iPhone, iPod
|
Konami confirms Kojima's stealth actioner will join Frogger, Silent Hill, Dance Dance Revolution on Apple's handhelds in 2009. Last week, a teaser page on Konami's Web site led many to speculate that the Japanese publisher was working on bringing the Metal Gear Solid franchise to the Xbox 360, reviving the Metal Gear Acid brand, or even porting the long-running series to the Wii. However, those predictions have turned out to be off base. |

F.E.A.R. 2 unbanned in Australia
|
Appeal sees refused classification status of F.E.A.R. 2 overturned in Australia; uncut version of game rated as MA15+.
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin's banning in Australia in late November capped off a depressing year for game classification down under. The much-anticipated horror shooter was the fifth game to be refused entry in Australia in 2008. It seems that local gamers have been given an early Christmas present, however, because confirmation came today that an appeal has overturned the Australian Classification Board's original banning of the game. |

Metallica talks Guitar Hero: Metallica
|
Oddly enough, if Activision Blizzard were to be asked today about the status of Guitar Hero: Metallica, the company would likely demur. However, that doesn't change information gleaned from a Securities and Exchange Commission filing and a Guitar Hero World Tour trailer, which both officially confirm the game and point to an early 2009 release.
In an interview this week with USA Today, Neversoft lead designer Alan Flores joined guitarist Kirk Hammet and drummer Lars Ulrich to provide further details on Guitar Hero: Metallica. The trio also addressed a few of the particulars of the upcoming rhythm game, namely noting that the game will be extremely challenging. |

Midway trims fat, cuts to the bone
|
Mortal Kombat and Wheelman publisher to lay off 25 percent of workforce, close Austin studio, cease development on multiple unannounced titles.
Earlier this month, Midway Games lost its highest-profile supporter when media mogul Sumner Redstone ditched his majority stake in the publisher for just $100,000. That triggered change-of-ownership clauses in the company's loans, allowing creditors to demand repayment of $150 million within 30 days. |

|
Dead Space studio condemns players to travel the nine circles of hell in third-person action adventure game.
Last week, Electronic Arts revealed itself as the new publisher of Brutal Legend, Double Fine Productions' action-adventure romp through hell with rock roadie Eddie Riggs. The setting apparently suits EA, given that today the company confirmed another hell-bound game, Dante's Inferno. |

Atari breaks Konami bond down under
|
Atari to halt distributing Konami titles in Australia; says Silent Hill: Homecoming still planned for local release.
With no local Konami office in Australia, the Japanese publisher has long had to rely on a distribution partnership with the Australian arm of Atari to get its games to store shelves. In fact, Atari has been distributing Konami games such as the Metal Gear Solid series down under for the last 10 years. That partnership will soon come to an end, however, with Atari Australia today confirming that it was discontinuing its current relationship with Konami. |

Report: PS3 Red Alert 3 back on
|
EALA's David Silverman says work has resumed on C&C RTS for Sony's consoles, hints at expanded content.
EALA's hyperbolic installment in the Command & Conquer real-time strategy franchise broke its seven-year hiatus last week, returning in fine form on the PC and looking to make similar headway on the Xbox 360 on November 11. Absent from the proceedings, of course, is the PlayStation 3 edition of the game, which EA placed on indefinite hold in June for unspecified reasons.
PS3 owners can now take heart, however, as EALA's David Silverman has confirmed for VideoGamer that the title is indeed still on for Sony's console. |
