Game of Thrones alum Jason Momoa can finally acknowledge that, yes, he’s been cast as Aquaman.

Rumored since at least December to be playing the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the actor has been denying his involvement for the better part of a year, not always convincingly. But with the unveiling last week of Warner Bros.’ ambitious DC Comics film slate, he’s at least free to say he’s starring in an Aquaman movie.

“It’s been a bitch!” Momoa revealed over the weekend at Walker Stalker Con in Atlanta. “Just dodging, you know, because I was asked to play it and the fact is you just have to keep it quiet, out of respect for Warner Bros. and their whole position. So now I don’t have to be quiet anymore. It was really hard for me.”

He added that he appreciates the opportunity to play a hero on the big screen, and that he can connect to it through his heritage as well as his schooling.

“Yeah, I did go to school for marine biology, but the cool thing is … the greatest thing for me is that Polynesians, our gods, Kahoali, Maui, all these water gods, so it’s really cool and a honor to be playing a [water] character,” Momoa said. “And there’s not too many brown superheroes, so I’m really looking forward to representing the Polynesians, the natives.”

Momoa also said his current focus is on director Zack Snyder’s 2017 film Justice League, not Aquaman.

“I don’t know the director,” he said. “I know about as much as you guys know. I know the Justice League will come first. That’s really what we’re going to focus on. I’m not sure if it will be [set] prior to Justice League or post. I don’t know too much about it. It will probably be where he came from. It will probably be his whole origin story I would think … I mean I don’t even want to get quoted on this shit. So I know we’re going to do Justice League first.”

While answering a question about romance in Justice League, Momoa revealed that he hasn’t seen the script yet. “I don’t think there will be a romance any time soon in Justice League,” he said. “I think we’re going to be kicking some ass. But I don’t know for sure, because there’s no script yet.”

The actor also said that he doesn’t know if Aquaman will appear in Batman v Superman, which hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
