Australian former-Rugby League footballer, Matt Nable has been cast as the big villain of ARROW Season 3, Ra’s Al Ghul!
There were rumors of Liam Neeson reprising the role he played in the Batman films, but instead, Nable (Riddick, Killer Elite), has landed the role of the head of the League of Assassins, and one of Batman’s greatest foes.
Though Nable has been acting since 2007, his career didn’t really take off until 2011, making him more of a newcomer, and now he plays one of the most respected characters in the Batman mythos on the very popular ARROW television series.
We’ve only seen teases up to this point of Ra’s Al Ghul. Throughout Season 2, he was referenced, and his daughter, Nyssa, turned up a few times as well. We know Arrow and Canary are linked to the League of Assassins, as is Merlin. And now that we have a face to put with the name, we can expect a strong showing from Al Ghul in the series. He will first appear in the fourth episode titled “The Magician.”
This was the leaked casting description for the role before Nable was cast:
“An iconic villain from the pages of DC comics. Leader of the League of Assassins. Regal, mysterious, of a bygone era. Proud and unforgiving. Ra’s is a ruthless strategist, a master of martial arts, and a shaper of history. He carries the wisdom of the ages, and protects some of its greatest secrets.Think the character of Bane from The Dark Knight Rises. Someone just terrifying. Not a lunkhead, but a smart and physically imposing man.”
This description leads us to believe the ARROW showrunners are looking to stay faithful to the Ra’s Al Ghul character. And given Nable’s peformance in Riddick, he does seem like an actor that can pull off that presence.
