Walt Simonson’s run on Thor was one of the seminal comic series of my youth and I can thank Thor for pushing me to become interested on mythology reading outside the comics world which lead to a love of reading in general. So in a way, Walt Simonson made me into the man I am today. With that distinction, it goes without saying that I am extremely excited about the artist’s return to Norse Mythology when Walt Simonson’s Ragnarök will debut in July.
The release date of the veteran writer and artist’s creator-owned series has been announced by IDW Publishing.
Ragnarök is the mythical armageddon of Norse mythology.
The comic marks the legendary Thor writer’s return to the stories of Norse myth, this time outside the framework of Marvel Comics.
“All I can say is that I’ve loved the stories of the Viking gods since I was eight,” explained Simonson when Ragnarök was announced as San Diego Comic-Con International last year.
“I am thrilled that with IDW’s help and support, I’m launching an ongoing series of stories built around a new vision of some old friends. And enemies.”
Simonson’s 1980s Thor run is considered a classic of the title, and is currently being reprinted by Marvel.
IDW will also publish a remastered edition of Simonson’s debut comic Star Slammer later this month.
