It seems as though all hope is not lost for a sequel to Dredd 3D. Due to a continued interest in the film, star Karl Urban said a “Dredd 2” is now more likely than ever.
“Interestingly enough, I did have breakfast with [“Dredd” writer] Alex Garland this morning. It’s not off the agenda. Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it,” Urban told Collider. “It’s entirely possible, and if people want to see another installment then they should be vocal about that, because, it can happen. The power of fandom can resurrect projects. In fact, that’s what happened with ‘Star Trek.’ They weren’t going to do a third season until fans did a letter writing campaign and they continued that series.”
Of course, “Dredd” already has a sequel of sorts. A graphic novel from 2000 AD will be released in September, with more information likely being released around San Diego Comic-Con. That comic book’s story is expected to work as a direct sequel to the “Dredd” film.
Meanwhile producer Adi Shankar said he is working on a “Dredd” short film during a Reddit AMA back in March. It’s unclear if either of these other ideas has replaced that, but Shankar seemed pretty excited about the prospect of the short at the time. Maybe we’ll end up getting all three projects, and then everyone will have more “Dredd” than they know what to deal with.
