DCsucksYesterday the comics world was shocked when AOL shutdown Comics Alliance. Known as one of the best and most respected comics/geek news sites online, the shutdown came suddenly and without warning. According to the site’s editor-in-chief, Joe Hughes, this was not due to a lack of readers, pointing out that, “Traffic on the site was better than ever.”

Interestingly, this does come at a time when DC Comics is busy making threats and blacklisting news outlets critical of the house Dan Didio and Jim Lee built. Since these two took the helm DC has been plagued with accusations of sexism, racism, cronyism, and overall horrid treatment of talent. And then, of course, there is the actual content of the books, which has been less than well received. On all these points Comics Alliance had been highly critical of DC.

I’m not one for conspiracy theories, but…

Right now DC Comics is actively trying to silence negative press. Comics Alliance was owned by AOL/Time Warner, which is tied to Warner Bros…who owns DC Comics. Is there a connection? Maybe. The real answer will come if AOL replaces Comics Alliance with a new comics news site that is a corporate mouth piece for Warner Bros and DC Comics.
