Mortal Kombat: Legacy – Ep. 6 – Raiden

Episode 6 Synopsis
“Raiden”

The following episode represents director Kevin Tancharoen’s “different take on the Mortal Kombat universe,” combining the perfect amount of gritty realism mixed with a hint of mysticism… When Lord Raiden, God of Thunder and protector of Earth, finds himself in an earthly mental institution in the year 2011, his ‘delusions’ are treated with some rather primitive forms of therapy (involving an ECT machine and an ice pick).  Nonetheless, Blue, his beautiful, fragile yet insane fellow inmate, is Raiden’s only hope of escaping the mental hospital and making his way to the Mortal Kombat tournament to defend Earthrealm from Shao Khan.

  1. Dianthrax says:

This kind of thing really fucking pisses me off! It just spreads ignorance and prejudice against psychiatry and people who are patients! It’s fucked up and wrong. And sorry Damien but I have to call your bias out on this too.

First of all for whatever reason everyone needs to make Psychiatric Hospitals scary and prison-like when there’s no way any legit hospital could just scoop some guy off the ground and keep him. So this one is obviously evil and horrible, OK fine.

So Damien- where is this primitive, horrible ECT machine being used on Raiden? I didn’t see any ECT going on, plus ECT isn’t used to treat delusions. It’s also not this primitive form of torture, either- it’s a legitimate medical treatment used on hundreds of thousands of people in the US every year.

It’s NOT the primitive treatment it may have been once and is always depicted & thought of as now, either. The placement of the electrodes is now a lot more specific making it much more effective, all the vital signs are monitored, there’s always more people than needed in the room just in case, muscle relaxants/paralytics have virtually eliminated any body injury from the seizures but they pad the table just in case. Plus you’re put under anesthesia for the whole thing- it’s not like they put you in a chair and give you something to bite down on
    !
Everyone seems to have this notion that ECT is just like Cuckoo’s Nest and that it’s only used on truly crazy dangerous, psychos and it’s not true. There’s enough misunderstanding about psychology and psychiatry and mental illness out there- can we try to not spread the lies and fear & discrimination around please?

And this could just be me being overly-sensitive, but did anyone else notice that all of the orderlies were, shall we say, gentlemen of color?

The doctor is, of course, some creepy old white guy. But the orderlies that Raiden throws around? 2 black guys and the one who looks Hispanic or maybe Italian?
    I’m just saying….

  2. Lord Shaper says:

Well I can see what you mean there Dianthrax and since that is the copy that I was sent I can’t say what machine they are intending on using as the ECT machine and to be honest when I was watching it I thought they were using the ice pick on him as a very primitive for of Lobotomy…

I didn’t notice the colour of the orderlies myself and I don’t know if that colour isn’t as big an issue over this side of the world as it can be in other parts but I only thought about it after you had posted it so I don’t know if the colour issue is a problem or not.

One thing I’d say is it doesn’t state what reality or time period that episode was in and to be honest there was rather bad practices in institutions in all of our pasts. And don’t think I don’t know about it either.

My wife does work in the Pharmaceutical industry which has helped a lot of the bad practices have been stopped due to the advent of the medications that help control rather than have people just locked up and sedated.

I enjoyed the episode and it also had a Dogma feel where it could have been the ‘creepy doctor’ keeping Raiden there to prevent him from going off to fight in Mortal Kombat…

    But that’s just my opinion!
