The revived Wonder Woman TV series is getting ready to finally live the dream. David E. Kelley, creator of “The Practice” and “Boston Legal” (among others), has been riding a roller-coaster for the superheroine series for the last bunch of weeks, but now it looks like things are finally evening out.
We learned of Kelley’s involvement with the lasso-swinging Amazonian princess last year, when it was revealed that the TV veteran had joined forces with DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. television to write and produce the series. Kelley cautioned fans a couple months later, saying that Wonder Woman wasn’t any kind of “sure thing.” He was right: every network passed on the script, including the WB-owned network The CW.
Then, two weeks later, a major turnaround occurred: NBC did pick up the show! Now the search for talent begins, and it seems Kelley and company are looping to rope in a big one: Terminator Salvation and Charlie’s Angels director McG!
It was only four days ago that NBC signed off on “Wonder Woman,” so this McG talk is a good sign that things are moving quickly for the series-to-be. The news comes from Michael Ausiello at TVLine, who is careful to report that nothing is confirmed just yet.
McG is a great choice though. Terminator Salvation was his most recent effort, but don’t let that get you down. McG is the right guy for a number of other reasons, none of them having anything to do with an army of human-hunting robots in a post-apocalyptic world.
For starters, McG directed both of the Charlie’s Angels movie. Goofy as they were, the filmmaker still had the incredible good sense to include Crispin Glover in his cast. More relevant to today’s news, he also did a great job of ensuring that his three leads delivered strong female action roles — which, as you might imagine, is pretty important for “Wonder Woman.”
McG is also no stranger to television, with executive producer credits on Human Target, Chuck, Nikita and Supernatural. Looking at all of these factors, Wonder Woman would be a perfect next move for him. There’s no confirmation yet, but TVLine describes him as “the odds-on favorite to direct the pilot.”
I think McG is a fantastic choice! A lot of fans are annoyed by the actual plans for the story though. Her situation, from what I’ve been told, sounds more like Power Girl than WW. I don’t know if I’ll ever be happy with any actress at this point. It’s going to be extremely difficult for any actress to slide into this role, sort of like when Routh was Superman; it just broke the mold of what everyone remembered by changing actors even though he was very similar.
