Despite the recent influx of 3-D movie releases, there’s at least one forthcoming comic book flick that won’t rely on the increasingly popular filmmaking technique: The Dark Knight Rises.
Christopher Nolan has made no secret of his aversion to 3-D in the past, and in a new interview with Deadline, he clarified his thoughts on why his third Batman movie won’t be shot in 3-D.
“In the case of Batman, I view those as iconic, operatic movies, dealing with larger-than-life characters,” he explained. “The intimacy that the 3D parallax illusion imposes isn’t really compatible with that. We are finishing our story on the next Batman, and we want to be consistent to the look of the previous films.”
Although 3-D isn’t the right avenue for The Dark Knight Rises, Nolan said he isn’t entirely closed off to the format — just as long as it suits the story.
“I’ve seen work in 3D like Avatar that’s exciting,” he said. “But, for me, what was most exciting about Avatar was the creation of a world, the use of visual effects, motion capture, performance capture, these kinds of things. I don’t think Avatar can be reduced to its 3D component, it had so much more innovation going on that’s extremely exciting. 3D has always been an interesting technical format, a way of showing something to the audience. But you have to look at the story you’re telling: is it right?”
In addition to his thoughts on 3D, Nolan was asked to reflect upon his feelings after Heath Ledger posthumously won an Oscar for his portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight.
“I was extremely gratified to see people responding to work that I knew was great,” he said. “And I was very proud to have been a part in its creation, or at least in creating a world where a great artist could really show what he could do. It was a great honor to be in any way involved in that.”
