Fables TV Series in Doubt

It was announced two years ago that a television adaptation of Bill Willingham’s “Fables” was headed to the ABC network as an hour long drama, but since then, very few details have emerged on the developing series — and sadly for “Fables” fans, it appears that there’s a good reason why.

Willingham told io9 in a recent interview that while he’s not completely sure on the status of the “Fables” TV show, he doesn’t expect that the version that was announced in 2008 is still on the way.

“The TV show that was prematurely announced is probably dead,” he said, adding: “Don’t hold me to that, because I don’t know. Hopefully, I’ll know before it airs, but I’m kind of out of the loop.”

Describing himself as “the last person to know about things like that,” Willingham said that the “Fables” series wasn’t without its fair share of support from executives at DC Entertainment, presumably the new regime led by president Diane Nelson, chief creative officer Geoff Johns and co-publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio, among others.

“Through rumors of rumors of mistellings of legends, I understand that the new DC regime was very much interested in getting ‘Fables’ going,” he said, offering a small hope for fans of the series.

Even when “Fables” was first announced as a television adaptation, Willingham expressed some skepticism. Speaking with MTV News in 2008, the comic book creator said: “It takes a thousand stages to greenlight a production, and any one of them can bring the process to a screeching halt. So let’s take everything with a grain of salt, here.”
