It may have been a foregone conclusion, given the reasonably successful execution of a potentially difficult transition to a new cast and production team, but the BBC has confirmed that a thirteen-episode season 6 will air next year.
Steven Moffat, who took over from Russell T. Davies as main writer and executive producer, says he will write five of the episodes plus the Christmas special for Matt Smith’s second run as the Time Lord, the same complement as the just-ended season 5–this despite the harrowing schedule this year dividing his time between Doctor Who and his other BBC series, Sherlock.
“The last year has been extraordinary,” he claimed. “I’ve had about four days off, and that includes Christmas day. I work every weekend, I get up early in the morning, I go to bed late at night. There is no way of balancing it.”
But in case you’re worried about him, he added: “It’s extraordinary, but it’s great fun too! Great fun, so long as it doesn’t kill me!”
