Judge Dredd Movie News

One of the not-so-secret secrets of the comic book movie world is that there’s a new “Judge Dredd” film in development based on a screenplay from “28 Days Later” scribe Alex Garland with visuals provided by “The Losers” artist Jock. Beyond those details — and the presumed exclusion of former “Dredd” star Sylvester Stallone — little else is known about the project.

Curious to find out more, 2000AD Review spoke with John Wagner, the creator of “Judge Dredd,” about his involvement and knowledge of the developing adaptation.

According to the creator, the upcoming take should be much closer to the “Dredd” comics than the widely panned first film was.

“I have read the script (by Alex Garland) and seen Jock’s visuals,” he confirmed. “While I can’t go into detail about the content I can say that it’s high-octane, edge of the seat stuff, and gives a far truer representation of Dredd than the first movie.”

Indeed, Wagner’s assessment of the initial “Dredd” movie isn’t particularly kind, to say the least.

“I hated that plot,” he said. “It was Dredd pressed through the Hollywood cliché mill, a dynastic power struggle that had little connection with the character we know from the comic.”

So how confident is Wagner that the new “Judge Dredd” will be a more successful adaptation?

“Confident? I will be once I hear they’ve started filming,” he said. “There’s many a slip.”
